Mathematics: Up to 6 (including Mathematics & Statistics)
Mathematics & Computer Science or Mathematics & Philosophy: Up to 3
The primary route to study maths at St Hilda’s is the undergraduate degree in Mathematics. In addition, there is the option to instead apply for degrees in either Mathematics & Computer Science or Mathematics & Philosophy. There is also a degree in Mathematics & Statistics (in the first year, this is identical to the degree in Mathematics; students wishing to study Mathematics & Statistics should apply for the degree in Mathematics).
Why study Maths at St Hilda's?
The College has a thriving maths community, with a friendly and intellectually stimulating environment in which students receive the support needed to reach their full potential. Tutorials are held in small groups by college tutors, including Professor Andrea Mondino, Dr Robin Thompson and Dr Jamshid Derakhshan. Professor Mondino is a world leading mathematician in Analysis and Geometry, Dr Thompson is an applied mathematician undertaking research in Mathematical Biology (with a specific interest in developing mathematical models to guide interventions during infectious disease outbreaks) and Dr Jamshid Derakhshan is an expert in Number Theory and Logic.
The St Hilda’s maths community also meets socially. For example, there is an annual St Hilda’s mathematics seminar and dinner, and third- and fourth-year students are invited to a finalists’ maths dinner. Events organised by the tutors help to foster a strong sense of community and contribute to making St Hilda’s a welcoming and supportive place in which students can get to know students in other years and share their enthusiasm for maths.
An Oxford maths degree is sought after by employers. Many of our students have gone on to do research in a range of topics in maths and the sciences. Other students have embarked on careers in various sectors, including computing, finance, teaching, data science and others!
Applying
Candidates applying for maths at St Hilda’s will take the TMUA – full details can be found on the Oxford Mathematical Institute’s website. Applicants are then shortlisted based on their test results and information included on UCAS forms. Shortlisted candidates will have two online interviews with St Hilda’s and one interview with a second college. Both interviews at St Hilda’s will involve answering previously unseen maths questions. Applicants are not expected to be able to answer these questions perfectly; the tutors are interested in seeing how applicants think about maths problems that they have not encountered before, rather than their exact answers.
Should you choose to apply to study maths at St Hilda’s and Oxford, the tutors would like to wish you the best of luck!
