Why Choose St Hilda's?

The Distinctiveness

St Hilda’s is a unique and remarkable college. We value scholarship and learning and also offer our students a relaxed and supportive environment in which to live. Our library collection is one of the most extensive of all Oxford colleges. St Hilda’s is also home to the Jacqueline du Pré Music Building, one of Oxford’s most exciting music venues. Students can enjoy the lawns freely in our four acres of informal landscape gardens. We are one of the few colleges with round tables in our Dining Hall, encouraging friendly and informal meal times.

St Hilda's is such a wonderful college... Older years are always there to give advice on academic and non-academic concerns... Being at St Hilda's really made the transition from school to university much easier.

The Setting

St Hilda’s has one of the most beautiful settings in Oxford. The buildings and gardens stretch along the banks of the River Cherwell which flows under nearby Magdalen Bridge. From the lawns, students can enjoy one of the best views of Oxford’s dreaming spires.

The College is a five-minute walk from Oxford’s busy High Street and the University Examination Schools, with the Bodleian Library, museums, laboratories and subject departments just a short way beyond this. St Hilda’s is also two minutes from Cowley Road, famed for its vibrant mix of independent shops, world cuisine restaurants, cafés and bars.

St Hilda’s College is also the closest Oxford college to the main Oxford University Sports complex on Iffley Road. Facilities include a power-lifting gym, rowing tank, Olympic-sized swimming pool, and running track. The sports complex offers our students a fantastic discounted annual membership.

St Hilda’s students benefit from a world-class teaching and learning experience within a tranquil riverside setting, whilst being within walking distance of lectures and classes. At St Hilda’s College, students really do get the best of all worlds.

We're the closest college to the University Sports Centre... We have lots of open space, and being right on the river is lovely, and we have our own punts to use in the summer term!

The Support

St Hilda’s has some of the best financial and welfare support for students. The College’s focus is on providing an environment where everyone can succeed. We help not only with study needs but also provide support when things might go wrong.

The College is a caring community. All students have a personal tutor in their subject. Students can also access welfare support from the on-site doctor, nurse and counsellor, as well as the Welfare and Junior Deans and the Disability Fellow.

Grants are available to purchase books, and to help with study-related travel, academic research projects as well as providing emergency hardship support. To enhance future opportunities, our former students have set up a wide range of networks to help, encourage and mentor new our graduates into their chosen careers.

St Hilda's College helps you feel at ease with some of the best welfare support in the whole of the University.

The Success

In 2021, 93% of our undergraduate students got an upper second class or first class degree in their finals. We are delighted by this and congratulate all of our students. We thank our tutors for their invaluable support of St Hilda’s students.

The tutors really do care about whether you are going to do well.

The Community

Being at St Hilda’s College means being part of a vibrant and diverse community. There is something for everyone; you can join a College sports team and organise or attend a drama performance, a concert, a speaker meeting, a Ball, or an arts festival.

‘My experience in St Hilda's has been so, so excellent - excellent academically, excellent socially with the vibrant MCR, and excellent with mentors, Fellows, and professors who are friendly and welcoming. That, for me, is what sets St Hilda's apart- the combination of world-leading academics and a real sense of community and inclusivity. You just don't get that at every college in Oxford. ‘
