Biography
Lauren Attfield joined St Hilda's College in October 2025 as a Lecturer in Applied Mathematics. She is also a postdoctoral researcher in the Environmental Change Institute, School of Geography and the Environment, and the data lead for the Leverhulme Centre for Nature Recovery.
Lauren teaches Prelims Multivariable Calculus, Geometry, and Dynamics, and Part A Fluids and Waves, Numerical Analysis, and Quantum Theory.
Lauren’s research is centred on conservation and global patterns of biodiversity, and developing models to combine existing ecological data to combat the biodiversity crisis. She is also broadly interested in identifying new opportunities to incorporate mathematical ideas and techniques into this applied research area. Lauren’s PhD (Imperial College London, 2017-2022) focussed on population modelling through climate-driven demographic processes, and prior to this she studied MMath Mathematics at St Hilda’s College (2013-2017). Lauren has also worked in the public sector, providing statistics and data science support to environment modelling and monitoring projects, has led teaching of quantitative topics to biosciences students, and has developed and led outreach activities to promote access to higher education through mathematics and its applications.
