Biography
Dr Irina Boeru completed her BA in Modern Languages at St Hilda’s College, her MSt in Medieval Studies at Wadham College and her DPhil at St Hilda's College. She has previously acted as a lecturer in French for the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages.
She teaches French language, Medieval and Early Modern French literature, and lectures for the University on a variety of late-medieval (from 1100 to 1530) and Renaissance topics, as well as on various aspects of critical theory and translation, literary geographies, literature and the visual arts, travel narratives and discovery, post-colonialism, human geography and cartography. She also teaches translation into English, and across the first-year course in French literature and for FHS.
Her interdisciplinary research sits at the intersection of various strands of intellectual history and literary culture, practical and critical cartography, geographical knowledge about the New World, seafaring and exploration, scientific discoveries and their impact, written journals of navigation, and accounts of conquest and conversion.
Her research interests include amongst others medieval and Renaissance cartography, historical writing, material culture and visual arts. Her current research project focuses on geographical humanism, digital cartography, and the circulation and production of knowledge in late-medieval and Renaissance hybrid texts and maps.
Her doctoral project examined seafaring exploration accounts in the Late Middle Ages. She has worked extensively on travel writing in the Middle Ages and Early Modern period in French, Spanish, Italian and Latin.
She is also a co-founding member of the Oxford Medieval Manuscripts Group, gathering a community of emerging scholars from the University of Oxford and beyond, around the study of medieval manuscripts and the art of illumination, current issues and research methodologies through seminars, workshops and curator-led symposia.
