Professor Ann Buchanan

MBE

Biography

Professor Ann Buchanan MBE was an internationally-known researcher on social policy who became the first Professor of Social Work at the University of Oxford.

From the time of her initial research in the 1980s she was interested in the outcomes experienced by children in care. An early champion of evidence-based policy, she did much to quantify the importance of family relations and was less interested in theories than practical solutions.

She became a Fellow of St Hilda’s College in 1994 and served as Dean the following year.

Her research influenced government policy. From 2000-08 she was the Director of the Centre for Research into Parenting and Children. She was a Fellow of the Academy of Social Science and served on the Councils of the ESRC and the Academy of Science.

In 2012 she was awarded an MBE for services to social sciences.

Memorial fund

St Hilda’s College has established a memorial fund in Professor Buchanan’s name that will receive gifts from her former students, colleagues, friends and family to benefit future generations of students. These gifts will be directed towards two areas that Professor Buchanan particularly cared about: undergraduate support and the Library. Donations will be used to create a named study booth once the refurbishment of the Library is complete. If funds permit, the family would also like to create an outdoor social space in Professor Buchanan's name. The balance of the funds collected will be used to support a named undergraduate bursary.
