Biography
Alfred is a Stipendiary Lecturer in Biology at St Hilda’s college for the 2026/27 Michaelmas term. He is also currently a member of Green Templeton College and Co-Captain of the Green Templeton Boat Club Open Squad. He joined the University of Oxford in 2025 as a DPhil student in the Evolutionary Genomics lab working with Professor Dmitry Filatov. Previously, Alfred completed his BSc Biology at the University of St Andrews (2024) and worked in the civil service in Edinburgh for Science & Advice for Scottish Agriculture (SASA) as a Zoologist.
Alfred's teaching interests are in Evolutionary biology, Genetics, and Ecology. This aligns with the content of The Diversity of life, Ecology and Evolution, and Genome Diversity modules.
His current research is centred around the question; Why do species stay separate? He uses bioinformatics, genetic sequencing, and population genetic statistics to understand the speciation history and evolutionary trajectory of the hybridising flower species White and Red Campions. These are common wildflower species which are easy to spot around Oxfordshire.
