Professor Helen Swift submits final manuscript of a Chastelaine de Vergi: Encounters in Medieval Literary Space

29 May 2026

Over the vacation, Helen Swift, Fellow in Medieval French, submitted the final manuscript of La Chastelaine de Vergi: Encounters in Medieval Literary Space, a volume of essays co-edited with her colleague Sophie Marnette (Balliol). Appearing later this year with Boydell & Brewer, this is a very special publication for both Helen and Sophie: it is a research project that would never had come about had they not spent the past twenty-one years teaching the first-year set text La Chastelaine de Vergi, a short courtly narra colaboeraative poem from the thirteenth century.

The volume is thus greatly indebted to - and indeed quotes from! - conversations with generations of undergraduate students who have studied it as part of the French course at Oxford. They look forward very much to an exciting launch, including dramatic performance of the work, in due course!
