In the third of our violin series this season, outstanding French violinist Irène Duval presents two early Beethoven masterworks for violin and piano that were completed a year before the great German composer’s ‘Eroica’ Symphony came to be written. The common dedication suggests that the two sonatas were intended to complement each other, and they encapsulate Beethoven’s development as an instrumental composer up until that point. The second half juxtaposes two characteristic works for violin and piano written by Clara and Robert Schumann, with the Romances having been composed shortly after Clara Schumann and with Joseph Joachim had premiered Robert’s sonata in Düsseldorf in 1853.
