This programme features some of the greatest German repertoire for clarinet and piano, covering the immense aesthetic distance between Weber’s ‘double concerto without orchestra’ written at the start of the nineteenth century and Brahms’s elliptical late first clarinet sonata written eighty years later for clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld. It is rounded off by two sets of ‘Fantasiestücke’ by Reinecke and Schumann, each of which emphasising flow, spontaneous invention, and lyrical warmth.
