Many of our courses require applicants to send in a sample of their written work as part of their application. But what is needed, both in terms of content and how many items are needed, does vary between subject.
Preparation
First, read the University's general guidance on written work.
Next, check the requirements for your chosen degree. This list will show you whether your course requires you to send in written work, but you must check the 'Admissions requirements' tab on each course page to view more details of what the course tutors want you to send.
Please send work that demonstrates your analytical, reasoning, language and writing skills, as appropriate for your chosen degree course. The written work may well form a springboard for discussion at your interview should you be shortlisted, so make sure to keep a copy for your own reference.
Please make sure details about the circumstances under which your work was produced are included on the cover sheet provided. Tell us under what conditions you wrote the essay, with what help, and in what timeframe. Tutors will take that information into account. We cannot accept written work without a cover sheet. Please don't submit your written work by email.
If the course requires you to submit written work as part of your application and you are worried that you don’t have a suitable piece of work to submit, or you are having problems submitting work, please contact the college via undergraduate.admissions@st-hildas.ox.ac.uk
If you are applying for music, please follow the extra instructions for submitting a video recording of a musical performance on your chosen instrument or voice.
Deadline
The deadline to submit work online is 23:59 GMT (UK time) 10 November. We do not accept any written work past this deadline.
Please note that the deadline for written work during this admissions cycle falls on a Sunday, and the office isn't open over the weekend. So, we won't be able to answer any enquiries received after 4pm on the Friday. You are encouraged to submit your written work well before the deadline, in case of any issues.
How to submit your work online
Before you start preparing your written work documents, please note that we can only accept PDF documents online. The maximum file size per document is 128mb.
Please do not send in more pieces of written work beyond the number required. They will not be considered or added to your application.
1. Scan your first item of written work. Save as a PDF.
2. Download the written work cover sheet.
3. Complete the cover sheet for this item of written work. You can either complete it digitally, or scan a completed hard copy.
4. Combine the cover sheet and the associated piece of written work into one PDF file.
5. Ensure all pages of your document are A4 size and legible, and that the cover sheet is the first page.
6. Ensure your file is named using the following format: SURNAME, First Name, SUBJECT.pdf and that the maximum file size per document does not exceed 128mb.
7. If you need to submit more than one piece of written work, repeat steps 1 through 6 for each additional item. Please make sure that your additional documents have slightly different names. For example, if you're applying for a Modern Languages degree it's helpful if you include the name of the language each item is written in, in the file title.
Use the St Hilda's written work submission form at the bottom of this page to send us your files. A confirmation message will show up on the screen, in place of the form, to tell you it has been submitted. We don't normally send additional confirmation emails that the document(s) have been received.
If you are unable to submit your work as a PDF then please send your written work and cover sheet via post instead, but they need to arrive before the deadline. Please contact undergraduate.admissions@st-hildas.ox.ac.uk for details of how and where to send it.
