Biography
Nicolas Shiaelis is a Lecturer in Physics at the University of Oxford. He is a permanent Lecturer in Physics at St Hugh’s College and is currently in his third year lecturing at St Hilda’s College, where he teaches first-year Mathematics, second-year Electromagnetism and Optics, and third-year Condensed Matter Physics.
Nic completed his DPhil in Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Oxford, supported by a BBSRC studentship. He was also awarded a Leventis Foundation scholarship during his earlier studies. His doctoral research focused on developing innovative approaches for rapid virus detection, alongside neutron reflectometry studies of viral envelope interactions. This work contributed to the founding of Pictura Bio Ltd, a University of Oxford biotech spin-out developing single-particle imaging and machine-learning technologies for pathogen detection.
His research has led to publications in journals including ACS Nano, Scientific Reports, and npj Parkinson’s Disease, as well as patents covering diagnostic technologies and machine-learning approaches for pathogen identification. Alongside his academic and teaching work, Nic is interested in the interface between physics, biotechnology, and entrepreneurship, and has delivered invited talks at the Saïd Business School and other institutions.
