Biography
After graduating from Nuffield College, Oxford with a DPhil, I held two post-doctoral research fellowships - an MRC NHS Training Fellowship and a DH Primary Care Career Scientist Award. In 2007 I was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Faculty of Public Health, and in 2008 was made a Chair of Public Health in the Early Years at Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick.
I now hold the chair in Evidence Based Intervention and Policy Evaluation, in the Department of Social Policy and Intervention, University of Oxford.
I am President of the Association of Infant Mental Health, editor-in-chief of Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMH), and a member of PreVAiL (Preventing Violence Across the Lifespan) research network.
I teach on the Masters Programme in Evidence-Based Intervention and Social Policy.
My primary research interest is the role of early life factors such as parenting in the aetiology of mental health problems, and the evaluation of early interventions aimed at improving outcomes for parents and young children, particularly during pregnancy and the postnatal period.
I also undertake research on the effectiveness of interventions in the field of child protection, and I am currently working with the NSPCC to develop a new prebirth pathway to support vulnerable pregnant women, and an intervention for families in which there is domestic abuse. I am also the lead investigator for the national evaluation of the A Better Start (ABS) programme.
