Biography
Charlie is Professor of Human Neurophysiology at the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging (WIN) and the MRC Brain Network Dynamics Unit (BNDU). She holds a Senior Research Fellowship, funded by the Wellcome Trust.
Charlie trained in Physiology and Medicine at Bristol University in the UK. She did her DPhil (PhD) research at the Oxford Centre for Functional MRI of the Brain (FMRIB), using advanced neuroimaging to study how the brain learns new motor skills. She was then awarded a Junior Research Fellowship at St Edmund Hall in Oxford, continuing to be based at FMRIB for her post-doctoral work, with research periods at University College London and the University of Miami, Florida.
Her inter-disciplinary group uses multi-modal neuroimaging and brain stimulation approaches in rodents and humans to understand motor plasticity, both in the context of learning new motor skills and regaining function after a stroke. Her work has two overarching themes: to understand the mechanisms underpinning human motor learning, and to use that understanding to develop novel therapeutic approaches. Her work is currently funded by funders including the MRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, and the Wellcome Trust.
Charlie has taught pre-clinical medicine at a number of colleges in the University and has been at St Hilda’s since 2021. As well as her college role, she teaches postgraduate students for the taught MSc Neuroscience courses at Oxford and is the External Examiner for Neuroscience for the University of Glasgow. Charlie is also the 2024 Physiological Society GL Brown Prize Lecturer, allowing her to visit Physiology Departments across the UK.
