The FJDG Annual Workshop on "Gender-Based Violence and Structures of Oppression" at St Hilda's College, University of Oxford, gathered experts and doctoral students from different fields to discuss the pervasive impact of systemic structures on gender-based violence. Professor Rangita da Silva de Alwis (University of Pennsylvania Law School and member of the CEDAW Committee) provided the keynote speech “New Debates at the CEDAW and in International Women's Human Rights Law”.
9 PhD and postgraduate candidates from various universities presented their work. These explored issues like legal responses to gender violence, cultural norms, and their influence on marginalized groups, such as women in conflict zones and those affected by discriminatory laws like headscarf bans. Lunch was provided, enhancing opportunities for networking and community engagement. Participants valued the workshop's inclusive approach, reporting positive feedback on the event’s role in fostering critical dialogue, community building, and solidarity in tackling these complex issues.
