18:45 PRE-CONCERT TALK – Dr Peter Copley
19:30 CONCERT - Villiers Quartet with Adam Vasilko

Schubert: Quartettsatz in C minor, D. 703 (1820)
Jessie Montgomery: Strum (2012)
Adam Vasilko: New Work for Alto Saxophone and String Quartet (2027)
Beethoven: String Quartet in F major, op. 59 no. 1, “Razumovsky” (1808)

This concert opens initiates new series focussing on Beethoven’s great middle period quartets, starting with his extraordinarily innovative and visionary first ‘Razumovsky’ Quartet, and simultaneously bids farewell to Late Schubert, in the form of the equally radical Quartettsatz. As compressed in its innovative as the ‘Razumovsky’ Quartet is expansive, Schubert’s piece seems to evoke Beethoven in its turbulent opening material and tempestuous key of C minor, yet arguably succeeds in establishing a distinctive identity of its own through its striking harmonies and sonorities. Tonight’s concert also features the latest of the Villiers Quartet’s collaborations with composers from St Hilda’s College, in the form of Adam Vasilko’s new work for alto saxophone and string quartet.
