St Hilda’s Student Runs Four Ultra-Marathons in Three Days for MND Research

4 June 2025

Thomas Milton (Biomedical Sciences, 2022), a finalist at St Hilda’s, is one of three Oxford students currently undertaking an extraordinary challenge: running four ultra-marathons in just three days to raise money for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) research.

The challenge—covering over 100 miles—was inspired by Dr Scott Minett, who was diagnosed with MND at just 33 and sadly passed away a year later. The trio hopes to raise both awareness and vital funds to support the University of Oxford’s ongoing research into this devastating disease.

Thomas shared the personal difficulty of combining endurance training with academic commitments:

“I’ve been training for this while revising for my Finals, which has been an enormous balancing act. Running a marathon for training and then getting straight back into the library was pretty challenging in the last few weeks!”
None of the team had previously run even a single marathon before committing to this challenge, making the physical demands even more intense.

“We’re massively pushing our physical limits,” said Thomas, “which has been really challenging but ultimately really rewarding.”
The team has already raised over £5,000 and hopes to raise much more for this vital cause.
