The Vice Chancellors awards

22 March 2024

Professor David Howey
VC awards

Many congratulations to our engineering fellow, Professor David Howey, and his former research team: Drs. Christoph Birkl, Damien Frost, Adrien Bizeray, and Rob Richardson, in the Department of Engineering Science, along with MBA student Ms. Carolyn Hicks, for being nominated in the Innovation and Commercialization category for the Vice Chancellor’s Awards in 2024. Their nomination recognizes their brilliant original research and their innovative, transformative ability (and persistence) to improve batteries and turn them into a product that will ultimately make our lives more sustainable.

Founded in 2016, they have extended battery lifetime by up to 60 percent, increased storage capacity by up to 49 percent, and have already deployed over 250 kWh of energy storage with their technology. In doing so, they have raised over £10M in investment to become a thriving company, employing 40 people from over 15 different countries, and based in the heart of Oxford.

Professor Howey commented: “Brill Power, a spin-out company from my research group, was co-founded by several of the very first doctoral students I had the great pleasure to supervise. All of them are outstanding people, and it’s a delight that I still get to see them regularly, a decade after we first met.”
