Exactly one hundred years ago Peter Warlock (alias Philip Heseltine) published his remarkable book The English Ayre (1926), the first attempt at a history of the published ‘table books’ starting with Dowland’s hugely successful first book. By 1926 the revival of Early Music in Britain had been going some thirty years, spearheaded by the French musicologist, instrument-maker and performer Arnold Dolmetsch (1858-1940).

Dolmetsch laid the groundwork for historically informed performance, developed later from the mid-century by Alfred Deller, Desmond Dupre and later Carl Dolmetsch and David Munrow. A parallel and linked revival of English music under Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Holst and Butterworth drew inspiration from folk music but equally from the rediscovery of early instruments and repertoire. This concert explores a range of twentieth century pieces from Dolmetsch to Dodgson that were intended for early music instruments and that carried forward the ethos of the Arts and Craft movement, itself inspired by the ideas of philosophy of William Morris.
