Beethoven: 11 Nouvelle Bagatelles, op. 119
Beethoven: Sonata no. 32 in C minor, op. 111
A special opportunity to hear Maki Sekiya play some of Beethoven's greatest piano works in one recital. The op. 119 Bagatelles preface some short pieces written in his characteristic late style with other movements composed around 1800. Beethoven's last three piano sonatas also achieve a profundity and transcendence through bringing together the past and future; although still drawing on fugue, variation and components of the Classical style, these sonatas reconfigure these elements to create a warm lyricism newly inflected by an elliptical sense of drama.
