St Hilda's College Writers' Day Oxford Literary Festival 2017

Organised by the St Hilda's College Media Network and Programme Director Triona Adams, St Hilda's College Writers' Day at the FT Weekend Oxford Literary Festival is on Saturday 1 April. Events will take place in Worcester College's Lecture Theater.

Our alumna and Honorary Fellow Dr Val McDermid (English, 1972) has been elected to become a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in February 2017. She is one of 60 distinguished individuals hailing from sectors that range from the arts, business, science and technology and academia. They join the current RSE Fellowship whose varied expertise supports the advancement of learning and useful knowledge in Scottish public life. Many congratulations to Val! You can read more here

Karina Gould (MPhil International Relations, 2011) was elected for the Liberal Party in Burlington, Canada, on 19 October 2015. Facing her first election, she was described by the Liberal party as “young, articulate and very well-educated.”

Well done to our winning alumnae, team captain Dr Val McDermid, Adele Geras, Dr Daisy Dunn and Dame Fiona Caldicott, who defeated worthy rivals Leeds University in the final of Christmas 2016 University Challenge. Many congratuations and thanks to them for providing our festive viewing highlights!

Our alumna and multi-award winning documentary Director/Producer Anna Hall produced and directed ‘Behind Closed Doors’ (True Vision Aire for BBC One), which has been shortlisted for Best Documentary Programme in the Broadcast Awards 2017.

The Fellows of Trinity College have announced the appointment of Hilary Boulding, Principal of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and alumna of St Hilda's College (Music, 1975), as their next President. Ms Boulding will succeed Sir Ivor Roberts, with effect from 1st August 2017. She was previously Director of Music for Arts Council England and before that was a producer, director and latterly a commissioning editor in arts broadcasting for the BBC.

Professor Jane Mellanby, Emeritus Fellow of St Hilda's College, was elected as Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London (RCP) on 6 July 2016. As the President and Fellows of RCP London heard in the citation to Professor Mellanby's election, '...over many decades, Professor Jane Mellanby has been an outstanding and inspirational educator of female medical students at St Hilda’s College in Oxford. She has also taught and mentored generations of medical students across the entire University of Oxford since the early 1960’s.

The Art of the Short Story, 2pm With Helen Simpson (Cockfosters), Frances Leviston (shortlisted for the BBC’s National Short Story Award) and Kirsty Gunn (My Katherine Mansfield Project).
