Mr Johannes Ungerer


Johannes Ungerer is the Erich Brost Lecturer in German Law and European Union Law at the Faculty of Law and St Hilda’s College. Prior to joining Oxford in 2019, Johannes taught and researched at the University of Bonn for five years, and also served as the Assistant Editor of the European Union Private Law Review (GPR). He studied law in Halle and Cardiff as a Studienstiftung scholar, and graduated with the German First State Exam and a LL.M.oec. master’s degree in business and economic law. He qualified for the German judiciary and bar with the Second State Exam; his training placements included the Court of Justice of the European Union, the Bundesverfassungsgericht, the German Federal Ministry of Justice, and the law-firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. 


German Law is taught by Johannes to undergraduates reading for the Law with German Law degree. In addition, Johannes gives EU Law tutorials.


Apart from several papers on Civil and European private law, the main research of Johannes focuses on private international and comparative law.
