A-Levels 2020 and the admissions process - update 25 August
St Hilda’s College is delighted to confirm that we have honoured all offers of a place to all applicants whose Teacher/Centre Assessment Grades (CAGs) have met their conditional offers. This is further to our initial Admissions decisions as outlined in our statement of 17 August.
In dealing with the volatility of this exceptional A-level period, St Hilda’s College followed the policies and guidance from the University’s undergraduate admissions team and the Colleges’ Common Framework for Admissions, and was in line with the University’s recent statement regarding CAGs on 18 August. On 21 August, the Admissions team received the updated International Baccalaureate grades as well as the Teacher/CAGs through UCAS. Working again with College Subject Tutors and Faculty/Department Admissions Tutors, St Hilda’s was able to confirm the places for all our offer holders who have now met their offer conditions. This is an further eight places in addition to those places confirmed on 13 August.
We are pleased that our Academic and Domestic colleagues at St Hilda’s could make these additional places available, whilst maintaining the necessary precautions required to avoid the spread of COVID-19, and still guarantee our high standards of teaching and domestic provision. Particular thanks go to the Tutors and other members of our Senior Common Room who have given up rooms to be converted to student study bedrooms.
As many are aware there is much variation between colleges in terms of potential numbers of students affected; capacity on individual courses; and their overall capacity. In addition to this, the University and its Faculties and Departments need to manage overall numbers and capacity in critical areas such as library and teaching space, scientific laboratory provision, and welfare support, amongst other important services. Resolving capacity issues requires a fair and co-ordinated approach and consideration was given to deferrals whilst also noting the need for intergenerational fairness to previous and future years. We are very conscious of the potential effect a significant number of deferred places might have on our Admissions capacity for October 2021. For reasons of confidentiality, we will not be sharing further details.
We thank everyone who has shown concern for our incoming students, and for those planning to apply in the autumn for places in October 2021. Finally, many congratulations again to the incoming Class of 2020. We look forward to welcoming them to St Hilda’s.
