Dr Georgina Paul will be Acting Principal of St Hilda's College 1 April 2021 - 31 January 2022
The Governing Body of St Hilda’s College is pleased to announce that Dr Georgina Paul will be Acting Principal from 1 April 2021 to 31 January 2022.
Our Principal, Professor Sir Gordon Duff, will be spending the last term of his tenure on sabbatical. During this time Sir Gordon will be working on aspects of global health, including preparedness for public health emergencies such the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr Paul will lead the College from the start of Sir Gordon’s sabbatical until our new Principal, Professor Sarah Springman, takes up post on 1 February 2022.
Dr Paul has been Vice-Principal of St Hilda’s since October 2020. She is in her second term in the role, which she held previously from 2016 – 2019. Dr Paul has had a long and close association with St Hilda’s, having read for the BA in Medieval and Modern Languages and the DPhil in German at the College. She came back to St Hilda’s in 2006 when she was appointed Fellow and Tutor in German. She teaches German Literature from the 18th – 21st centuries, German language and film. Dr Paul’s research specialisms are in contemporary German literature and the literature of the post-1945 period.
We look forward to working with Dr Paul in her new role as Acting Principal and to starting Trinity Term with her as our Head of House.
From 1 August 2021 she will be supported by Professor Julia Yeomans as Acting Vice-Principal.
Dr Paul said: ‘It is an immense privilege to serve my College as Acting Principal for the next ten months. Professor Sir Gordon leaves the College at the end of his principalship in very confident shape and with a transformed College site. We all owe him huge thanks for his achievements. I am greatly looking forward to working with the Fellowship, all our colleagues on the College staff, our brilliant and wonderful students, and our Senior Members and many illustrious supporters to pursue our ambitious plans for our College and to carry the flame to hand over to Professor Springman early next year.’
Professor Sir Gordon Duff said: ‘Serving as Principal of St Hilda’s these last seven years has been an honour that will remain warm in my heart.
I was delighted when Governing Body elected Professor Sarah Springman as Principal. In the extended interim, covering my Trinity Sabbatical and beyond to Professor Springman’s starting date, I am so grateful to our Vice-Principal, Dr Georgina Paul for stepping into the Head of House role.
Those who know Georgina will share my confidence that the College will be in superb hands. She has a deep commitment to St Hilda’s and, as principal author of our strategic plan, has a keen understanding of where we are going. She has, in abundance, all of the skills needed to maintain our competitive trajectory as a world-class centre of teaching and research.
St Hilda’s is fortunate in having such a champion to lead the College through potentially choppy waters in what is, hopefully, a receding global pandemic.
I am truly grateful to Georgina for the invaluable support and kindness she has given me in her role as Vice-Principal, and for her preparedness to step up to lead St Hilda’s when the call came.'
We are planning a College party in the autumn (COVID-19 restrictions permitting) to celebrate the completion of the first phase of our building project, to thank Sir Gordon for all he has achieved for the College in the seven years of his tenure, and to wish him and Lady Duff well for the future. Further details will follow.
