We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Barbara Levick, Emeritus Fellow, on 6 December 2023.

Barbara Levick held the position of Fellow and Tutor in Lit. Hum. (Literae Humaniores) from 1959 to 1998. A graduate of St Hugh’s College, she earned her D.Phil. in 1959. Her roles at the College included serving as College Librarian from 1956 to 1959 and as a Lecturer in Classics from 1957 to 1959. Subsequently, she served as Senior Tutor and chaired the Board of the Jacqueline du Pré Music Building. Her mentorship touched the lives of countless undergraduates, inspiring generations of students.

A preeminent scholar in Roman Imperial history and women in antiquity, Dr Levick authored numerous influential publications, among them 'Tiberius the Politician' (1976), 'The Government of the Roman Empire: A Source Book' (1985), 'Claudius' (1990), 'Vespasian' (1999), 'Julia Domna: Syrian Empress' (2006), 'Augustus: Image and Substance' (2010), 'Faustina I and II: Imperial Women of the Golden Age' (2014), and 'Catiline' (2015). Her professional affiliations included serving as Vice-President of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies and as a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.
