Dr Jamshid Derakhshan completed postgraduate studies at the Mathematical Institute and Merton College, Oxford, starting at age 17 and obtaining his DPhil in Mathematics at the age of 21, without doing an undergraduate degree. For his doctoral thesis he was awarded the University of Oxford's Senior Mathematical Prize and the Johnson University Prize. During his studies he was a Senior Scholar at Merton College.

He was a Lady Davis Postdoctoral Fellow at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a Postdoctoral Fellow at Bar Ilan University, and then held visiting positions at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques (IHES) in Bures-sur-Yvette, the Hebrew University, and the Mathematical Institute at Oxford. During the year 2013-2014 he was a Departmental Lecturer in Pure Mathematics at the Mathematical Institute at Oxford University, and since October 2014 he has been a College Lecturer in Pure Mathematics at St Hilda’s College. He is currently also the Dean of Degrees of St Hilda’s College.

Jamshid works in the areas of Mathematical Logic and Algebra, and specifically Group Theory, Model Theory, and their connections to Number Theory and Algebraic Geometry.
